Don't Be Soft!

I saw a tweet earlier this week from a pro triathlete doing some training at Playitas in the Canary Islands. I've heard this is one of the winter hot spots that triathletes, cyclists, and other athletes like to frequent when it is bitter cold in the Northern Hemisphere. A closer look at their website lists amenities like a 50m outdoor pool, running trails, and well paved roads across the island.

There is more to VO2 max than performance

VO2max is a popular topic among exercise physiologists and endurance athletes. Exercise physiologists use VO2max to measure the effectiveness of a training protocol; if VO2max increases, the training protocol is effective. Endurance athletes use VO2max as a marker of fitness and compare values at various times of the season.

ECo: Qualifying to run at the Olympic Trials is an accomplishment beyond what many athletes can even dream to achieve, so first, congrats! How did you prepare yourself for such an elite race?

Angie: A lot of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice.  It's like having a part time job.  I was fortunate because the job I had while training for the trials was flexible with regards to hours and allowed me to find time in which to get my workouts completed.

This is part 3 of my “Phases of Motivation” articles that I began writing after finishing my last Ironman as a professional (click for part 1 and part 2).  It took me almost an entire year to realize what “Phase 3” was, but here it is…  

The picture to the left was taken during a Thanksgiving 4-mile race.  I did the race because it sounded like a fun thing to do, but as I lined up at the start line I had this strange thought that I 'owed it to myself' to do this race.  Why was that???
