Three ECo athletes nailed their races at Ironman...

If you are interested in taking your athletic performance to the next level - whether that next level is beginning a training program for the first time, improving your personal best time, winning your age group, or turning professional - you came to the right place.

Joe Company, PhD founded ECo in 2010, but prior to this he coached at the high school and collegiate level, worked with Olympic training programs, and worked with a number of high-performance athletes, scientists, researchers, and coaches.  Joe began consulting endurance athletes in 2002, but as he evolved in his education and experience, he wanted to make his expertise available to more people.  ECo is the product of Joe's experience.

Endurance Company coaches and partners are carefully selected to provide quality coaching, teaching, information, and advice. All ECo coaches provide a valuable combination of education, practical experience, and knowledge in Joe's training philosophies.  Endurance Company coaches apply these key principles to provide unparalleled, customized training programs for all abilities of athletes.

Is protein and/or BCAA supplementation beneficial for endurance athletes?

There has been some debate as to whether endurance athletes benefit from ingesting protein and/or branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during and/or after exercise.  I dove into the scientific literature for some insight.  What follows is a brief summary of the literature as well as my insight.

Extreme endurance exercise exhibits conservation of blood glucose and muscle glycogen

This is a summary/review of a journal article investigating extreme substrate usage during extreme endurance exercise.

HELGE, J.W., N.J REHRER, H. PILEGAARD, P. MANNING, S.J.E. LUCAS, D.F GERRARD, J.D.COTTER.  Increased fat oxidation and regulation of metabolic genes with ultraendurance exercise.  Acta Physiologica, Vol. 191, pp77-86, 2007.

high fat diet and carbo loading on extreme endurance performance

This is a summary/review of a journal article investigating the effect of nutrition on extreme endurance exercise.

HAVEMANN, L, S.J WEST, J.H. GOEDECKE, I.A. MACDONALD, A. ST CLAIR GIBSON, T.D. NOAKES, E.V. LAMBERT.  Fat adaptation followed by carbohydrate loading compromises high-intensity sprint performance. J Appl Physiol, Vol 100, pp194-202, 2006.

It's Just a Number

Note:  This post was written in 2007, my last season racing as a professional.

I had my VO2max tested again today. VO2max tests are so cool.  Even before I began graduate work in Exercise Physiology, I was always geeked out about lactate threshold and VO2max, what they mean, the science behind them, and how they can be applied to training.
