As the weather warms and many of you are increasing your training in preparation for upcoming races, this is a great time to focus on your nutrition. This year’s National Nutrition Month theme, “Get Your Plate in Shape”, is perfect for the Endurance athlete. Focusing on the basics of nutrition can improve your training, and benefit your health as well.
I used to think that getting a massage was a luxury I couldn’t afford. I saw no value in lying on a table having someone “rub me down.” My resistant attitude towards massage faded as I aged beyond my twenties and continued to get injured from the miles upon miles I was logging. I decided to give it a try.
Massage therapy and molecular biology are not often used in the same story. Until now. Early February, researcher Justin Crane, PhD et al. published a paper that showed that 10 minutes of massage therapy had numerous positive molecular effects. I summarize the paper and their findings below.
In August 2010, researcher Michael Joyner, MD and colleagues published a viewpoint in the Journal of Applied Physiology that asked “Who and When” will the 2-hour marathon barrier be broken? This viewpoint was quickly followed by 45 responses from scientists around the world.
