Joe Company, PhD founded ECo in 2010, but prior to this he coached at the high school and collegiate level, worked with Olympic training programs, and worked with a number of high-performance athletes, scientists, researchers, and coaches.  Joe began consulting endurance athletes in 2002, but as he evolved in his education and experience, he wanted to make his expertise available to more people.  ECo is the product of Joe's experience.

Dietary Protein for Active Aging

As much as we focus on optimizing performance in all of our training programs, we are also focused on creating habits to enhance 'healthy aging'. This article nicely outlines the benefits of protein in an active older adults. Some take-home messages include:

- as we age, it is very important to focus on maintaining muscle mass
- aim for 30-40g protein post-exercise
- the type of protein you choose makes a difference
- protein supplementation can augment gains in muscle mass and strength

As you can see, at least 20g of whey protein leads to the greatest postprandial (post-eating) muscle protein synthesis (making bigger muscle). The main idea from this graph is that you want at least 20g of whey protein to optimize muscle protein synthesis.
