ALBERTO DIAZ-ARIAS

2011: 10k PR, 1/2 marathon PR, marathon PR

I started running half marathons about 2 years ago & attempted the Rock n Roll 2010 San Diego marathon. I had been holding my own in sprint triathlons and half marathons following a combination of training plans I had devised. So I said to myself: "you can train yourself for a full marathon". I tried. I thought I had trained well. What a disaster that race was. Miles 21 to 26 thru Fiesta Island were the longest most painful miles I have ever ran (if you call shuffling running!). I decided I would need a little outside help if I wanted to get thru another marathon in a respectable fashion.

I happened to ask Angie Turner for insight & she suggested I talk to Joe. Joe and I spent a couple of hours at the Broadway brewery talking about goals, training approaches, & work out philosophies. After a few pints of stouts we decided to work together. I figured that a coach that hydrates and carbo loads on stouts can't be all that bad!!!!!!

His work outs are goal oriented, detailed, and tailored to the stage of the training you are at. By the same token, there is flexibility & sufficient variety as to keep it exciting, interesting, challenging, and fun. There were very few work-outs that did not leave me wanting for more. In the process I have learned that more is not better, that you need to allow time for recovery, and that you need to be focused on the specific training activity you are doing.

Joe is very diligent about answering your questions via email, text, or on the phone. Doing several training runs with him was also very helpful in understanding subtle running techniques. We even got a chance to run Show Me State Games 10 k together. He coached me thru the whole race. In the end though, it was a bit discouraging to realize that the guy was talking all the time while I was trying not to puke!!!!!!

His availability is just phenomenal. His depth of knowledge of running physiology, race hydration, and race nutrition is impressive. As the training progressed I felt stronger and more confident. Early on I had a very good showing at the Hospital Hill half marathon & later, I was able to set a half marathon PR while in the middle of a strenuous phase of training.

He set out a well thought out race, hydration, & nutrition plan for the marathon. I was able to improve my time by 36 minutes! What was most special for me was reaching the 20 mile mark feeling strong. The highlight of my season was reaching mile 23 still having a little gas left and being able to pick up the pace to finish strong. I was wasted but very pleased.

It really was a fun 6 months. I look forward to working with Joe again and hope to hit 3:35 or faster next fall. Oh yeah, the post race meeting putting down a few more pints was also fun!
